Sze-Wing Tang's research interests lie primarily in natural language syntax and parametric approaches to comparative grammar with a special focus on the syntax of Mandarin Chinese (Putonghua) and Cantonese, syntactic differences among Chinese dialects, and syntactic differences between Chinese and English.

Some specific topics that Sze-Wing is currently working on include:

1. definiteness of nominals and nominalization in Chinese dialects,
2. the "discontinuous constructions" in Cantonese, and
3. the syntax of the argument structure of Chinese.
